While winter months allow us to gather around cozy fires, pull out those warm sweaters and your favorite leather boots, it can wreak havoc on your skin. Low temperatures, gusting winds, and lower humidity levels may often leave your skin feeling dry, itchy, and begging for extra care. Cold, dry air can strip our skin of lipids, which are part of the natural barrier that protects the surface of the skin and locks in moisture.

When we escape from the cold weather into dry, heated buildings, that also brings a noticeable change in our skin. Many of us tend to suffer from dry or dehydrated skin, and we usually notice when the texture or appearance of our skin starts to become dull, tight, and rough. Now that we have colder weather, some of us may be experiencing an increase in those symptoms.

People who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis may also notice a flare up during these times. However, cold weather may not be the only culprit – harsh soaps, hot showers, diet, and insufficient water intake can all leave your skin feeling a bit dry and rough.

Taking the proper steps can help to prevent dryness and dehydration in the skin. At Parfaire, we believe in beauty through knowledge, so we will be sharing some of our best tips for managing dry skin, all year long.

How To Care for Your Skin this Winter:

  • Exfoliate: To help lock in moisture, it is important to prepare your skin! Dead cells sit on the top layer, if those cells are not able to shed during cell turnover, they will sit on the top layer, blocking product from penetrating the skin. Exfoliating twice weekly will help slough off any dead skin cells that may be sitting on the surface.*
  • Serum: Apply a hyaluronic acid serum before your moisturizer. Hyaluronic acid is a natural water-binding substance found in the skin. It can hold up to 1,000x it’s weight in water and smooth the appearance of fine lines. It is a great way to give your skin the extra hydration it needs regardless of your skin type.*
  • Moisturizer: Switching from a lightweight moisturizer to a cream. A thicker moisturizer will protect your skin from the elements that may be evaporating water from the skin. You can also try adding a few drops of clary sage, rosehip, or coconut oil into your moisturizer to give it an extra boost.*

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water – at least half your bodyweight in ounces – everyday to help rid the body and skin of toxins and help replenish the body of any water that is lost throughout the day.
